Memories of a Aztec Rugby
A continuación una anécdota de un Azteca de los 70's tal y como le escribió a Manolo. Espero sirva para enterarnos de la Historia que tiene nuestro equipo.
Hello, Emmanuel. I wish I had pictures of the Aztecas from those days. I went to the U of A in 1974/5. Ichy was our Captain - a little fire plug of a guy with a big heart. I remember one game we played at the Reforma Club in Mexico City where they carried 4 of our guys off the field. We still won. I remember that one guy on the opposite team was discovered to be wearing metal cleats and was cutting our guys up pretty bad. We talked about it in our huddle and the next play we took him out - they had to carry him off the field. We beat the French Army but never could beat the English Barbarians - they had too much finesse though they were an older team. Our jerseys were black and green, I think. Do you all still do the dance and song of the "Zulu Warrior" after every game?
I have another old friend back near Chicago who played the year before I did - I'll contact him and ask him for any information he might have.
How I miss the U of A. I went home to Indiana in the US for the holidays and ended up jumping out of an airplane and had a pretty bad parachute accident and did not get back to Mexico. I never did find out what happened to my guitar that I had left with a gal there. It was beautiful - I had bought it in Puebla - hand made.
Talk to you soon, Emmanuel.
